From project space (1000 - Brussels) to backhouse gallery (1050 - Brussels) to our new location (1080 - Brussels), our mission has always been to facilitate the production and dissemination of artistic research into broader civic discussion. From 2011 - 2014, we operated out of a former garage in central Brussels. During these years, the space acted as a type of artist agency, collaborating with a variety of local and international organizations and producing thematic exhibitions, commissioned performances as well as participative public programming. These activities rotated around social issues such as, for example, violence against women, data protection and privacy or urban pollution. Clients with an interest in art's potential contribution to public health, such as the United Nations, the European Commission, the Brussels-Europe Liaison Office and the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office, helped finance community based educational projects and workshops between other exhibitions. In 2015, we moved to a non-traditional, but more suitable venue for the close collaborations we had begun with a small team of artists who shared our passion for long-term research, epic narratives and emerging historical perspectives. While we were no longer able to organize block party type events, our commitment to the local landscape continued through self-organized initiatives like The Penthouse Art Residency, Fundamental Research and the No New Enemies Network as well as our integration to projects like Caveat (research into artistic ecology) and participation to juries, advisory committees and regular presentations at educational institutions throughout the Benelux.
These activities remain core to our company DNA and compliment our artists' work with major museums, events and collections around the world.
While global issues change, our mission doesn't.
