Taking over the entirety of the gallery, Jane Hayes Greenwood: Garden of the Night brings together new paintings and an ambitious sculptural installation.
In her book, The Argonauts, Maggie Nelson questions whether there is something inherently queer about pregnancy. She describes how it profoundly alters one’s ‘normal’ state and creates both a radical intimacy with and alienation from one’s own body. She questions how an experience so wild, strange and transformative also symbolises the ultimate conformity. Garden of the Night explores this contradictory experience, drawing on the natural world and historical cultural artefacts to better understand this intensely personal and bodily experience.
