Galerie Barbara Weiss was founded in 1992 by Barbara Weiss with a location on Potsdamer Straße. The gallery quickly established itself with an intellectually challenging and curatorially progressive approach. Equally sensitive to artistic developments and political questions, the gallery has since its very beginning been distinguished by an enduring concern for conceptually informed and feminist positions.
In 2011, Galerie Barbara Weiss moved to its current location in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Continuing its multifaceted and conceptual approach, the gallery has, in recent years, presented solo exhibitions by internationally acclaimed artists, including Monika Baer, Maria Eichhorn, Ayse Erkmen, John Miller, Rebecca Morris and Mai-Thu Perret.
Today, the gallery is directed by Bärbel Trautwein and Daniel Herleth, a position they have held since 2014. When Barbara Weiss passed away in 2016, Bärbel Trautwein and Daniel Herleth continued the gallery’s work, a continuity that emerged from joint endeavors undertaken in previous years. Under the new directorship, several artists have joined the program: Amelie von Wulffen, the pioneering ecological artist Peter Fend, and Puppies Puppies, adding one of the most innovative emerging artists and further deepening the gallery’s distinguished commitment to political engagement and feminist practices in the aesthetic field.
