Jan Mot

The gallery grew out of a nameless living room-gallery that started at the end of 1992. In April 1995 the gallery participated for the first time in an art fair (Foire International d’art Actuel de Bruxelles) and from 1996 the activities moved to an independent space in the center of Brussels. The gallery was named ‘Galerie Mot & Van den Boogaard’ and started working with a new group of artists like Pierre Bismuth, Douglas Gordon and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. In September 2002 the gallery moved to a larger space in the same street and changed its name to ‘Jan Mot’. The objective of the gallery is to establish close collaborations with a relatively small group of artists, and to develop projects in- and outside the gallery space. Two of these larger projects are Programme (2006-2007), a series of screenings, discussions, presentations and performances, and Oral Culture (2008-ongoing), a series of life performances that are ‘orally based’. Since 1996 different projects were realized with curators and artists not represented by the gallery, amongst them Robert Barry, Dorothea von Hantelmann, Jonathan Monk, Raimundas Malasauskas, Suely Rolnik and Seth Siegelaub. Between August 2011 and April 2013 the gallery had a space in Mexico City where exhibitions were programmed parallel with the activities in Brussels. In June 2014 Jan Mot moved to a space being a hybrid of a white cube and a library space; and since early 2017 the gallery occupies a space at the Petit Sablon inaugurated with a solo show of Francis Alÿs, one of the artists who recently joined the programme.
